What Your Teeth & Gums Say About Your Health

Did you know that your oral health is linked to multiple health issues in other parts of the body? If the level of bacteria in your mouth is allowed to grow, it can spread to other areas and result in lasting health conditions that negatively affect your quality of life.

To understand the consequences of poor oral health, we've created a list of five health issues that are linked to your teeth and gums. We recommend making an appointment with your dentist if you fear you may develop any of these conditions as a result of your oral health. You may also want to seek out professional help if you worry that your oral health is worsening symptoms of an existing condition.

1. Cardiovascular disease

As stated above, the bacteria in your mouth can spread to other parts of your body. One of the most dangerous places it can travel is through your bloodstream to your heart.

It's no wonder there's a link between oral infections and inflammations with clogged arteries and heart disease. This connection between gum disease and heart disease is one of many reasons why you should never neglect the health of your teeth and gums.

2. Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease is a devastating neurodegenerative condition. A study performed by scientists from the University of Central Lancashire discovered the presence of a bacterium in the brains of people with dementia. This bacterium, Porphyromonas gingivalis, is also associated with gum disease.

There are many other studies proving the link between gum disease and Alzheimer's and dementia. Though brushing and flossing regularly may not reduce your chances of developing these diseases immensely, having good oral hygiene will still have a meaningful impact.

3. Diabetes

Diabetes and oral health can influence each other considerably. For example, people with diabetes have less resistance against infections, which can lead to developing severe gum disease. Alternatively, those who already have gum disease will likely have a harder time controlling their blood sugar levels.

4. HIV/AIDS

Unfortunately, a common symptom of HIV/AIDS is problems related to gums and teeth. People with HIV/AIDS tend to experience both painful mucosal lesions and dry mouth.

Though dry mouth may sound minor in comparison, the lack of saliva can greatly worsen oral health. This is because saliva has antimicrobial agents that help keep our mouths clean and healthy.

5. Pregnancy complications

Pregnancy causes many hormonal changes, which can lead to oral infections if the expecting parent doesn't practise proper oral hygiene. These infections and gum disease can also affect the health of the baby as they can cause pregnancy complications and premature births.
